Arguably, Spider-Man's greatest enemy of all time is the Green Goblin, or at least, he's certainly done enough physical and psychological damage to the wall-crawler to earn that spot. And while the goblin has had many revised and reimagined looks over the years, I've always been a fan of the classic green mask with the purple vest and pointed hood. But what if this version wasn't just a costumed super villain, but something more akin to a horror movie monster or slasher villain? That's what I set out to do in this illustration. Something as silly as a green and purple goblin costume can be presented as truly terrifying. I wanted him to look as frightening and unsettlingly creepy as I could. Imagine you see this humanoid silhouette outlined in moonlight, his piercing yellow eyes glowing in the night. Then he activates one of his pumpkin bombs, which flickers to life, revealing more of his grotesque visage. Spit flies from his disgusting mouth, as he cackles with sinister laughter and reaches out to strike! I wanted this illustration to look like something straight out of a horror movie, like something that Spider-Man himself would see in his nightmares.
I started off by drawing a very detailed and refined sketch of the goblin based on one of his more modern redesigns that didn't stray too far from his original costume. I wanted to emphasize the textures of his skin and the materials that make up his outfit. I then brought it into Procreate and enhanced the outlines more, before laying out the base colors. I then added varying degrees of shading and heavy shadows, along with a dark, moonlit background. I also added the flame and smoke effects to the goblin's pumpkin bomb, and the drooling spit that flies out of his mouth.
