(February 2023-April 2023)
Before Jurassic Park was a Hollywood blockbuster, it was a novel written by Michael Crichton. While both the book and the movie involve dinosaurs escaping and attacking people, the tone of the book is far scarier. The scenes featuring dinosaurs (specifically the carnivores) are presented in such an unsettling way that if they were adapted on screen, it would be a terrifying horror movie. Personally, I think the book is really well written, and the scenes are set up wonderfully! I could imagine them in my mind. So I drew several scenes from the novel that really stuck with me to show just how haunting and imposing these animals could be.
Initially, I tried to go straight to detailed and finished sketches (see the images on the left), but I was unhappy with the composition. So I started over completely with a series of rough sketches (see the middle two images) to figure out how I wanted the composition to look. When I found one I was happy with, I made more detailed and refined sketches. I then inked each illustration by hand, getting immersed in the details of the dinosaur's scales, the surrounding foliage, and how the shadows lay across the different forms. After each piece was inked, I added color in Procreate, first laying the base colors, then additional shading and highlights.
